Readly reveals surge in knitting downloads

Digital magazine service Readly has recently shared the UK’s largest search trends in digital magazines for 2019. With access to a portfolio of over 5,000 magazine titles, with more than 83 million issues read globally last year, the results reveal the most searched for trends and topics that Brits wanted to explore – with crafts such as ‘crochet’ and ‘sewing’ both featuring in the top 10 searches, with knitting taking the number one spot.

Is this in response to our quest for a more sustainable lifestyle? Are we edging away from fast fashion and wanting to learn how to make clothes for ourselves? There are 60 titles on Readly that specifically target the crafting market.

It’s great to see a strong appetite for craft amongst our subscribers – alongside key health, sports and wellbeing topics

Back in 2015, I launched The Craft Network for TI Media as a print and digital hub for crafters, producing specialist print magazines on sewing, quilting, knitting, crochet and cake decorating. I also worked on brand extensions and licensed craftzines, such as crochet The Stickman, and knit The Gruffalo and In the Night Garden. As an avid sewer, papercrafter, and okay, somewhat novice knitter, this was a dream gig. I built up a team of talented specialist makers and writers to produce a series of monthly magazines. From shooting Christmas sweaters and patterns for the most gorgeous of baby knits, to models in upcycled garments and patchwork quilts, my vision was to bridge the gap between the ‘hard-core maker’ and the ‘one-day crafter’, offering engaging yet practical how-to copy teamed with beautiful, inspirational imagery, high production values and great cover mounts. Magazine titles included Love to Knit & Crochet, The Sewing Network and Cake International.
