Create a look AND feel that’s all about luxury

I love my bedroom. It’s always been my sanctuary. And that’s been especially true of late, as our home has morphed into home classroom and a place where ‘play’ and ‘work’ seem to spill into every room. So when Ideal Home asked me to focus on ideas for updating our bedrooms for my monthly Interior Design Advice feature, I knew there’d be plenty to chat about. In fact, I could have written a book.

I consulted three leading interiors experts: the brilliant Fionnuala Johnston, Partner & Senior Designer of the Home Design Studio at John Lewis & Partners, whom I’ve had the pleasure of chatting to on many occasions (interviewing would be too formal a description as our home and design ‘chats’ usually span hours over a cuppa); interior designer Annabel Grimshaw, whom I met on a recent press trip, and interiors superstar and my coaching partner Emma Morton-Turner, founder of Inside Stylists.

The upshot… your bedroom should reflect your personality and mood and that’s whether, as Fionnuala says, ‘you choose restorative tones, like soft, warm neutrals, or go for a more eclectic look’. The trio also agreed on a mix-and-match approach to furniture; from statement headboards to more practical chests of drawers – don’t feel that everything has to match for a winning scheme (like the image above from John Lewis & Partners, which mixes finish and colour), plus they shared plenty of tips on adding those all-important finishing touches. My favourite quote? Well that has to be Emma’s cushion observation – I couldn’t agree more. It’s right up there with towels on loo seats, but that’s another feature…

Cushions standing on their corners should be banned. They just look wrong
