How to you update your outdoor space

Creating a garden that serves as an outdoor room has never been so important, as we all discovered during lockdown – that outdoor space, whether big or small, was getting so much-overdue attention. So how do you make the most of what you have? That was my brief for Ideal Home’s August Interior Design Advice feature, which I wrote while largely confined to my own back yard, complete with trampoline. I was asked to find a garden designer (easy, my Mastermind coaching partner, Victoria Wade, the talent behind the above pic), a stylist (again, the brilliant Selina Lake fitted perfectly), and a garden centre owner (mmm, much tricker as garden centres hadn’t yet reopened, staff were on furlough, including PRs…).

So this shout out goes out to the family team of Middlecombe Nursery, who, while busily nurturing those seasonal plants and eagerly-yet-cautiously waiting for an announcement ‘any day’ that they could reopen, found the time to give some amazing advice.

I’m not a fan of perfect ultra-slick gardens that are designed more for looking at from the house rather than spending time inn
